Or “they are only doing this to be special and to feel superior”. Where does this prejudice come from? Veganism is a topic where people feel offended even if nobody is accusing them. Because vegans are “restricting” themselves for the wellbeing of animals which is kind of altruistic. For most vegans, it doesn’t feel that way after a while because they realize all the benefits they get and they explore other food options and don’t feel like “restricting” anymore. Non-vegans often know that it is a good thing but also don’t want to change their habits, because we like stability and not change, especially not a change in our habit.

So yes most vegans feel good about their choice not to harm animals anymore. We also find it hard to understand why other people don’t get it. Why do vegans have the right to feel “a little” better? 😉 Put yourself in the perspective of the victim. If a cow had (and could) decide which human being she would prefer: the one killing her or the one not harming her. I am quite sure she would pick the second one and please don’t argue like the cow wouldn’t be born without the one killing her (if you believe this, pls read this). So we can all agree on this: In the perspective of not harming (or less harming) other beings, vegans are better (but only in this perspective). Like someone doing charity work makes them better in supporting the community/other humans in need. BUT vegans aren’t perfect, nobody is, so they aren’t better humans overall. And most vegans have been omnivores in their lives at one point and they know that non-vegans aren’t worse people. The main difference between them is how they look at the animal industry. We don’t feel superior to others, but the topic itself has something where most people feel offended. I know there are vegans which have not enough understanding and call omnivores probably bad people or offend them in other inappropriate ways. But most of us totally understand the difficulty in changing his habits and we would rather discuss in a neutral way or even help someone than trying to offend them.

Doesn’t this food just look great? There are so many vegan menus. Just try it out 🙂

If someone is using the above prejudice and you just want to give him a short and simple answer, you could go for something like this:

We aren’t better human beings, because everybody has his strengths and weaknesses. We are better in perspective of not or less harming animals, but we aren’t perfect. We feel good about our decision, but this doesn’t mean we feel “worth” more than everybody else. You probably also have something you are proud of and you feel better than others (e.g. sport, community work, career). I know there are vegans which confirm your statement, but most of us don’t feel that way, because we were not born vegan either and don’t want to offend anyone. So I think this prejudice is not fair and I hope you understand this. If not I am wondering how I made you feel less worthy than I am?

Do the change and go vegan

By simply making other choices in the supermarket you can have a direct impact on the harm caused to other living beings. If you have any concerns regarding veganism have a look at my other articles and if you still have open questions or if you are struggling at a specific point, just leave me a comment or contact me directly. If you want to support this webpage and me to continue spreading the vegan message you can do this here. Thank you a lot.

Don’t close your eyes and ask yourself what stops you to make a difference? I am convinced you won’t regret it.

Cheers,
