I don’t see much of a problem in this statement. But it is mostly used in a context where non-vegans want to downplay vegans and claim it is only a matter of time till you and most of the other vegans turn “normal” again. And so I think you need to explain to your counterpart the difference between a trend and a movement. A trend tends to end at some point and a new trend is starting. Trends can be very short, e.g. fashion trends which normally only last one or two years and trends like “hippie-lifestyle” which was mainly from 1960-1970. And yes veganism got “trendy” and a lot of companies started to earn money and push the vegan-lifestyle (sometimes out of the right reasons and sometimes just out of business perspectives). But most vegans would agree with me that they don’t do it just because it is “trendy”, but they care about the animals, their health and the environment. And it seems hard to believe that informed vegans turn around and stop caring about this topic (the problems behind them are urgent and everybody knows it). Especially not vegans who already made the connection. Just as a comparison: Do you think someone labeled anti-slavery as a Trend? Or anti-death sentences in prisons? Or can we label the fight for equality for black and white people as a trend? And the right for women to vote or their equal rights in general? I don’t think so. This is a fundamental habit change. All these examples have one thing in common. Something was truly wrong in our system (in our world). When these revolutionary ideas started most people have been against it or couldn’t believe a different world would make sense or even work.

Google trends: https://trends.google.de/trends/

The chart above shows how often the word vegan was used in the search engine google since 2004. Since most people use google on a regular basis this gives us a pretty good inside in the uprising interest of veganism. And it is continuously growing as more and more are aware of the fact that something is completely wrong in animal agriculture. And I am pretty confident that this upgrowth will continue. As a comparison, you can look at the chart of fidget spinners if you put the bar to the left 😉

To summarize: If someone is labeling veganism as a trend and you feel not taken seriously in what you do, explain to him the difference between a trend and a movement. But we don’t always have to argue about such little statements, because your counterpart is probably using the word trend just for “something new” and doesn’t even think about it that much.

Do the change and go vegan

By simply making other choices in the supermarket you can have a direct impact on the harm caused to other living beings. If you have any concerns regarding veganism have a look at my other articles and if you still have open questions or if you are struggling at a specific point, just leave me a comment or contact me directly. If you want to support this webpage and me to continue spreading the vegan message you can do this here. Thank you a lot.

Don’t close your eyes and ask yourself what stops you to make a difference? I am convinced you won’t regret it.
