The term humane slaughter is used pretty often to sugarcoat the act of murdering an animal. What does the term “humane” even mean? The overall definition is: “having or showing compassion or benevolence”. If we use the term regarding treatment of a living being there are several definitions like “acting in a manner that causes the least harm to people or animals:”. By killing an animal how do you show compassion or benevolence for it and how do you intend to cause “the least harm” to an animal if you end its life? Because there would be a choice (we have enough alternatives) to not kill it which would cause no harm at all. The term just defines that the animal was slaughtered in a legally acceptable way (without unnecessary suffering) but it has nothing to do with the word “humane” itself. A humane slaughter doesn’t make the slaughter better or worse it is just a way to make the slaughter acceptable from a legal point of view and in our minds.

Humane slaughter doesn't exist

I spare you pictures of suffering and dead animals to prove you that it is not possible to kill in a “humane” way. But instead look at this calf and ask yourself: How can you kill this animal in a nice way? Doesn’t matter if you cut its throat, put it in a gas chamber or kill it with a captive bolt at the end it is dead. To not torture it before killing it doesn’t make it “humane”. This term is just used to make us feel less guilty or more acceptable for ourselves and from a legal point of view.

Do the change and go vegan

By simply making other choices in the supermarket you can have a direct impact on the harm caused to other living beings. If you have any concerns regarding veganism have a look at my other articles and if you still have open questions or if you are struggling at a specific point, just leave me a comment or contact me directly. If you want to support this webpage and me to continue spreading the vegan message you can do this here. Thank you a lot.

Don’t close your eyes and ask yourself what stops you to make a difference? I am convinced you won’t regret it.

Cheers,
