“Speciesism is the idea that being human is a good enough reason for human animals to have greater moral rights than non-human animals” (BBS.co.uk). Speciesism can be compared with racism, sexism or other worldviews which some groups have. A lot of people see speciesism not as important as racism or sexism because the victim is an animal and not a human being. Speciesism is about equality between all species on this earth. Racism is about the origin of humans. Most people would value the life of a human more than an animal and I dare to say most vegans also would if they had to. And this totally makes sense, because every species feels more connected among each other. So if I want you to stop doing speciesism I don’t ask you to value human life over a frog’s or any other species live. You don’t have to do such a decision anymore. The only decision is if we want to kill the farm animal for our taste or if we value a farm animal live equally as any other living being and just don’t kill it. If you don’t like people from a specific origin you don’t have to interact with them, just let them do their thing and don’t make their life harder than it is and just treat them fair. Speciesism wants the same for the animals. Let them be and just don’t harm them (and don’t pay anyone else to harm them). If you want to, you can even support them but you don’t have to. And for me, the most important thing in speciesism is: Don’t value a dog over a cow’s live or any other animal. They should be treated equally. The only difference they have is lying between our definition: pet, a wild animal and a farm animal (read more about “farm animals”).

Young kids don’t do speciesism by themselves. The same applies to racism, discrimination between man and woman and so on. As kids, we treat others nicely (especially animals). Or how often do you see a small kid killing a rabbit, chicken or sheep out of pleasure or hunger? A hungry kid would rather take a bite of grass than a bite of a rabbit. The only reason why we differ so much between animals is the society in which we grow up. If we would start to teach our children to value animal lives equally they wouldn’t eat meat anymore.

PS: And for the record to answer this question already, yes I would kill a puma or another wild animal if it is in self-defense (which will most probably never happen and if so I would probably not win 😉). This is not about speciesism it is about the will to live which every species has.

Do the change and go vegan

By simply making other choices in the supermarket you can have a direct impact on the harm caused to other living beings. If you have any concerns regarding veganism have a look at my other articles and if you still have open questions or if you are struggling at a specific point, just leave me a comment or contact me directly. If you want to support this webpage and me to continue spreading the vegan message you can do this here. Thank you a lot.

Don’t close your eyes and ask yourself what stops you to make a difference? I am convinced you won’t regret it.

Cheers,
